CHAPTER ELEVEN

“AND I’M TELLING YOU,” Lucky paused, and then hit his knuckles against the sheriff’s desk. “We almost had him.” He turned away. “But she had to have an attack of conscience.”

Ben rearranged the papers on his desk. They put out an APB on the red Miata but he didn’t hold much luck there. “If you ask me, she did the smart thing. All it takes is some pissed off judge to throw the book at you. How’s Nick doing?”

Lucky laughed mercilessly. “We’ve had so many disasters lately; he’s just taking it in stride. Anything new to report on that?”

“No, clean as a whistle so far. No prints.”

An officer entered Ben’s office. “Here’s the update Sheriff. We followed the two suspects from the cave to the casino. Seems they’re employed by Mr. Vincent Dupre, owner of the place. He declined to comment except to say that when his employees do on their own time is none of his business. And hiking wasn’t exactly illegal.”

“Hiking with a fucking Glock sure as hell is,” Lucky growled. “Did you take the slug out of the tree?”

The officer shook his head. “Nope; wasn’t anything to take out. Saw the hole of what might’ve been a bullet in a tree, but the place was cleaner than your mother’s kitchen floor.”

“That’ll be all. Thanks,” Ben murmured as the officer backed out the door.

Lucky stood up. “I’ll see you, Ben.”

“Where are you going?” He looked over the rim of his bifocals. “I know what you’re thinking Lucky. I’ll have some men stake out the place, but you stay away from that casino. You’re in enough trouble already.” He wagged a fat finger in Lucky’s face.

“So a little more isn’t really going to matter now, is it Sheriff?” Lucky retorted. He closed the door before Ben could reply.

Lucky headed for the farmhouse to find his brothers. As he pulled into the driveway, he saw Zoe coming from the other direction. He rolled down his window as she drew beside him. “Thought you’d be flying out on your broom, witchy woman,” he teased.

“It’s in the shop,” she rejoined with a grin, then grew serious. “Be careful, Lucky. Renée takes chances, too many damn chances. One day she’s going to get hurt.”

“Another famous prediction, Zoe? Don’t worry. I’ll take care of her.” She might be a bit unconventional, but Lucky could tell Zoe Kincaid had a kind heart. “Thank you for your help.”

Zoe smiled softly in acceptance. “I know you will. But you have to let her take care of you too. That’s the only way your heart will ever heal.” With a wave she headed down the road.

Lucky contemplated Zoe’s last words as he walked into the kitchen. Sam, Mac and Nick were sitting around the table. “Where’s Renée?”

“She’s upstairs with Rebecca. They’re playing with Harris,” Mac stated. “So how goes the hunt?” Lucky filled him in on everything from Ben. “My guess is that those goons are not going to give any info to the cops, even though they are looking for the same guy.
